Muleskinner, University of Central Missouri, MO

Dear Male Students,

It has come to my attention that you need help with dating. Whoever said chivalry is dead when it comes to treating women sure was right. I have some guidelines that might help you.

No. 1, hold doors open for ladies, and I don't just mean on dates.

Alestle View: Thanksgiving break is too late

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

8 hours ago by Alestle Editorial

Tree branches are bare, a new chill fills the air and the once populated Quad now sits empty on most afternoons.

Thanksgiving break is right around the corner and just in time, too. Most students and faculty are exhausted by the long and arduous semester, and even some of the best students are feeling the burnout.

When I saw "Sister Mary Ignatius," my first thoughts were that Speak Out was going to be getting a lot of calls over the weekend. I could certainly see how someone could find themselves offended by the material. But I never dreamed that it would result in a fiasco that could change the way the theatre and dance department chooses their productions.

Victories are temporary, photos are forever

One Saturday last month, I found myself in the midst of another Saluki battle. This time, the Dawgs brought the heat in the cold waters of the natatorium as they competed in their first home meet of the season against New Orleans. Surprisingly, the Salukis won their home opener.

Next time, I'll take a corn dog

There are certain events I partake in just for the food. This year I attended the Missouri State Fair - not because I like livestock or tractors, but because of the fried pickles, corndogs and elephant ears.

I think it's safe to say most of us attend Thanksgiving dinner for the food.

This I believe

The Drury Mirror, Drury University, MO

1 day ago by Amy Maas

I believe that Thanksgiving doesn't get enough credit. It's a very important holiday and more often than not it gets skipped over in the commercial anticipation of Christmas.

This year, right after Halloween, I put away the jack-o'-lanterns and unpacked my Thanksgiving decorations.

Illini celebrate resurrection of bigoted mascot

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

1 day ago by DI Editorial Board

On Nov. 15, after the Illinois-Ohio State game, 9,000 Illini alumni and current students gathered in Assembly Hall to watch what many refer to as a ceremony of "honor" or "respect" for the University of Illinois and the Illinois Confederation; however, "Chief Illiniwek" is nothing more than a dishonorable and disrespectful display of condescension.

Losing faith in the media

The Current, University of Missouri Saint Louis, MO

1 day ago by Sarah O'Brien

It has been hard recently not to question the bias of the media coverage that is seeping into our daily lives.

Right and left, media organizations claim balance and straight talk, but it always just seems that they are intrinsically angled towards a certain goal.

An historic election breaks barriers, rebuilds others

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

1 day ago by Jeff Mason

"A historic night in American politics."

"A breakthrough that would have been unthinkable 30 years ago."

"A triumph that overcame racial barriers."

That was said Election Night, just after 10 p.m. on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News and every other network, newspaper and Web site in the country and around the world.

Success in "living" the college life

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

2 days ago by Harry Zollars

Over the weekend I met with some friends who accused me of not "living" because 1) I am in college, which is school, and you never truly "live" in school, and 2) I don't have a job, which is the primary goal in life, and having a job is a necessity to "living.

Every so often, faculty members get a little break from teaching. Students that have never heard of sabbatical may think it's just a vacation, but that's not the case.Faculty members are researching and working in their field of study in order to help improve their teaching methods to provide students with the best information and opportunities possible.

Science talks: some science events on campus

The Current, University of Missouri Saint Louis, MO

The Astronomy Open House is closed for the winter, and the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center's Conservation Forum has come and gone, but there are still science events on campus.

Before we move on to upcoming science events, we should note that the World Ecology Center awarded its Conservation Action Prize during its recent Conservation Forum.

High divorce rate is bad for USA

The Times-Delphic, Drake University, IA

2 days ago by Katrina Widener

Although I am lucky enough to have parents who are still together, many of my peers do not. The divorce rate has risen immensely in the past century, and sometimes I wonder why. When my grandparents were growing up, divorce was not considered. It was something that happened rarely, and when it did, it was the cause of much discussion.

Stupid criminals of the month: November edition

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

2 days ago by Jeff Henderson

People do stupid things. Stupid people do stupider things. Stupid criminals are even higher up in the rankings for doing stupendously stupider things.

But when it comes to winning the "Moron of the Month" contest, the winners are more often than not going to be stupid drunk people doing UNTHINKABLY stupid things.

Campus crime vs. common sense

The Current, University of Missouri Saint Louis, MO

There is a moment of decision we have all experienced.

The scene looks something like this. You are in the Nosh/writing lab/an MSC lounge and you need to run to the restroom.

In the chair next to you is your backpack, your jacket, a few assignments paper-clipped together-basically, all your worldly possessions.

Freedom is most vital

The Times-Delphic, Drake University, IA

2 days ago by Joel Sage

On the evening of Dec. 16, 1773, more than 150 Americans boarded English ships loaded with tea from the East India Company in protest against "taxation without representation." But this was not merely an act of dissatisfaction, irritated Americans expressing their frustration towards a government that did not represent their interests.

Wikipedia gets a bad rap

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

2 days ago by Saif Ansari- Daily Bruin, UCLA

In January of 2001, Wikipedia, "the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit," was born. Initially composed of only a few hundred articles and a fairly unattractive home page, Wikipedia currently boasts over 10 million articles in 262 languages. Offering instantaneous access to a nearly infinite amount of knowledge to Internet users all over the world, Wikipedia is regarded by some, next to the printing press and sliced bread, as one of the greatest human innovations of all time.

Imagine the majo-rity of Western stricken with a virus that causes 24-hour diarrhea and vomiting.

Not possible, right? Think again.

Hope College, located in Holland, Mich., was inflicted with a sickness know as norovirus last week, which, according to an article written by the Grand Rapids Press, came on so suddenly and violently that those infected were actually throwing up mid-sentence.

Why my heart is broken

The University News, University of Missouri Kansas City, MO

3 days ago by David Montgomery

As I walk across campus and hear the buzzing about change and how America's new direction is really going to be a step forward for our country, I find myself fighting back tears at times.

While America revels in this monumental step forward in the American Civil Rights Movement, I feel so much pride, yet my heart is broken.

Local crime, part II

The University News, University of Missouri Kansas City, MO

3 days ago by Greg Vandas

Last week, my roommates and I were robbed at gunpoint of our money and cellphones less than five minutes from UMKC's Volker Campus.

What started as a simple late-night fast food run turned violent and life-threatening in no time at all.

I write this piece in response to another Forum article I wrote earlier this year (see "Local crime cannot be ignored any longer," 9/29/08) and any dissent I may have gotten for it.

Celebrating an Iowa City icon, the Hamburg Inn

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

It is well-known that all walks of life have made journeys to the Iowa City area to pursue incredible endeavors. We have the Writers' Workshop, one of the leading hospitals in the nation, and an esteemed engineering program. And although most of these aspirations pertain only to education, there is at least one other reason that Americans make their pilgrimage to this part of eastern Iowa: the Hamburg Inn is the mecca of diners.
